International
International & Cross-Border
English-language contracts, overseas transactions, and negotiations or disputes with foreign parties — advanced from both Japanese and global perspectives. As a New York–admitted attorney, we handle internationally rooted matters end to end.
Overview
International matters typically stall at the walls of language and jurisdiction: the English correspondence grinds to a halt, it is unclear whether Japanese or foreign law should govern, or there is no clear way to bring in local counsel. We keep matters moving in English from consultation through contracts, negotiation, and resolution, coordinating overseas specialists as needed while keeping a single point of contact on the Japan side. Built on practical experience as a New York–admitted attorney and on international work at a major firm, we cover everything from corporate cross-border transactions to individual cross-jurisdictional matters.
How we help
What we can do
English-Language Contracts
Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating English-language contracts — designed down to the clauses that matter later, such as governing law and dispute resolution.
Cross-Border Deals & Market Entry
Building the contract framework for overseas transactions and market entry, and coordinating local-law compliance — including whether local specialists are needed.
International Disputes
Negotiations with foreign parties and international arbitration or dispute resolution — engaging the other side directly in either language.
Global Data & Compliance
Cross-border data handling such as GDPR, and building global internal policies — informed by hands-on IT and data-protection experience.
Coordinating Overseas Counsel
Forming a team with local specialists and, even across multiple jurisdictions, running the matter through a single Japan-side contact.
Our approach
So that language and jurisdiction never stall a matter — we build a team with overseas specialists and keep a single point of contact on the Japan side.
How it works
From consultation to resolution
First consultation (in either language)
We map the overall shape of the transaction or dispute and which jurisdictions are involved. Consultations in English only are fine. The first 30 minutes are free.
Team & structure
We decide whether local specialists are needed, split the roles, and consolidate the point of contact — clarifying up front what happens on the Japan side and what happens locally.
Drafting & negotiation
We draft and negotiate the English-language contracts and coordinate with the other side, taking on the bridging between Japanese and English.
Execution & closing
We handle execution and coordinate any local procedures, keeping the process together even when several countries are involved.
Ongoing support
We support post-transaction operation and issues that surface later, continuing as your contact for ongoing international matters.
Typical requests
For example, we take on requests like these. If you are unsure whether your situation fits, please just tell us.
Please review and negotiate an English-language contract with an overseas company
We are expanding abroad and need to set up local-law compliance and a contract framework
We need to handle a dispute or negotiation with a foreign party, in both Japanese and English
We want advice on international data transfers and GDPR compliance
About fees
The first 30 minutes are free. Depending on the matter, we propose a retainer plus success fee or time-based billing. Where overseas counsel is needed, we keep a single Japan-side contact and set out the overall picture, including local costs, in writing before work begins.
