Adoption
Adoption (youshi-engumi) is a legal system to create a parent-child relationship between unrelated persons. Ordinary adoption (Civil Code Art. 792+) preserves ties with biological parents, while special adoption (Art. 817-2+) severs them entirely by court order. Special adoption requires the child to be under 15 (raised from 6 in 2020 reform) and a 6-month trial period.
