Damages (songai-baishou) is the obligation to compensate harm caused by tort (Art. 709) or breach of contract (Art. 415). Three categories: actual losses (medical bills, repairs), lost profits (income loss), and emotional distress (consolation). Reasonable causation required (Art. 416).
